First Day of Fall Camp

Fall Camp

Our first day of fall camp was a huge hit.  The campers made these amazing fall pictures using watercolors, oil pastels, and salt!

We also assigned parts for our Reader's Theater and we can't wait to start rehearsing!  Next class will focus on creating with clay and using our voice and facial expressions when acting!

Apples and Brushes Jr. Art Camp

Apples and Brushes Art Camp was a HUGE success!  We had SO much fun creating Dr. Seuss art and finishing the week with a performance of The Lorax.

Our Lorax! The kids helped decorate the back drop for the performance.
We made these fun frames for the campers as a reminder of their week at camp!
Ms. Baker made these fun snacks to go with each Dr. Seuss book we read.  After the performance parents and campers enjoyed these tasty treats!

I loved how these paper mache hot air balloons turned out!  They were inspired by Oh The Places You'll Go!

The campers are working on their Truffula Trees!

Our wonderful group of campers!  Thank you for an amazing week!!
We will be holding another camp this October.  It will be offered after school.  We will post more information as the time approaches!

Artists Unit of Study

What a year it has been.  Vicki and I have truly enjoyed teaching our colleagues about how to integrate art into their curriculum!  We held our last class of the year this month and awarded some of our friends with "perfect attendance" awards.  We want to thank everyone for their support on our new adventure!

For our last class, we explored the art of Degas and discussed how to integrate other artists into the curriculum.  This is great for an end-of-the-year unit to keep the students engaged and focused!!  Please visit Deep Space Sparkle or Teachers Pay Teachers to purchase Patty's wonderful artist units!  For children's books on artists, search for authors Laurence Anholt and/or Mike Venezia.  There are several other resources as well!

Thank you to our "perfect attendance"  award recipients!

Artists Unit of Study

Apples and Brushes
Artists Unit of Study
Monday, May 19th
3:00-4:00

At our school we finish the school year with an arts festival called Piccolo Palooza.  During these two weeks Vicki and I keep our students engaged by teaching a unit of study on various artists.  Some of the artists we research are Monet, Degas, Van Gogh, Paul Klee, Picasso, and Matisse.  During our last class of this school year, we will show you how to integrate these artists into a unit of study.  We will focus on Degas and recreate one of his famous pieces of art.

A great resource Vicki and I use is Deep Space Sparkle.  Patty sells many of her artists units on TPT and offers some lessons for free on her website.

We hope to see you in class!

Pictures First Approach

We would like to thank our colleagues for another wonderful Apples and Brushes class.  The work they create always amazes me!  We discussed how to use a picture first approach is writing through art with a focus on poetry.  First, we created flowers to use when making repeated prints.  Then, we took inspiration from Eric Carle and created pictures using painted paper.  We finished by discussing how to use these pictures when teaching poetry and went further to discuss other art mediums to use when teaching other writing units of study.

Stay tuned for our final class of this school year!  We are also excited to begin a new journey as Apples and Brushes Jr. which will target teaching elementary children Common Core Standards through arts integration.  We will be hosting our first class this July through Wando Community Ed.

Pictures First Approach

Pictures First Approach
An arts integration approach to writing
Wednesday, April 23rd
3:00-4:00 pm

In our next class we will focus on the pictures first approach to writing.  I'm not talking about crayons and markers. I'm talking about taking inspiration from other author/illustrators, printmaking, tissue art, etc.  During class we will teach you the process of printmaking using only a stryofoam plate and show you how to use Eric Carle's illustration technique to teach your children poetry.

Hope to see you there!

Seussational

We had another wonderful class yesterday afternoon!  We provided tips and tricks on how to incorporate clay in your classroom curriculum.  It proved to be a great stress reliever as well when kneading the clay to get the air bubbles out.  We took inspiration from Dr. Seuss' One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish and created clay fish.  It was so inspirational to see how different they all turned out.

We were so thankful for those teachers who participated as it is a busy week with report cards due next Monday.  They all seemed to be enjoying themselves.

Next month we will focus on the PICTURES FIRST approach in Writer's Workshop with an emphasis on poetry.  We will create Eric Carle inspired illustrations as well as learn the art of printmaking.  We will finish class with an acrostic poem.

Hope to see you there!
